Silicon Valley, Singapore, Tel Aviv--the global hubs of entrepreneurial activity--all bear the marks of government investment. Yet, for every public intervention that spurs entrepreneurial activity, there are many failed efforts that waste untold billions in taxpayer dollars. When has governmental sponsorship succeeded in boosting growth, and when has it fallen terribly short? Should the government be involved in such undertakings at all? Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the first extensive look at the ways governments have supported entrepreneurs and venture capitalists across decades and continents. Josh Lerner, one of the foremost experts in the field, provides valuable insights into why some public initiatives work while others are hobbled by pitfalls, and he offers suggestions for how public ventures should be implemented in the future. Discussing the complex history of Silicon Valley and other pioneering centers of venture capital, Lerner uncovers the extent of government influence in prompting growth. He examines the public strategies used to advance new ventures, points to the challenges of these endeavors, and reveals the common flaws undermining far too many programs--poor design, a lack of understanding for the entrepreneurial process, and implementation problems. Lerner explains why governments cannot dictate how venture markets evolve, and why they must balance their positions as catalysts with an awareness of their limited ability to stimulate the entrepreneurial sector. As governments worldwide seek to spur economic growth in ever more aggressive ways, Boulevard of Broken Dreams offers an important caution. The book argues for a careful approach to government support of entrepreneurial activities, so that the mistakes of earlier efforts are not repeated.

The newest addition to Pantheon's growing list of graphic novels: a visually beautiful, narratively intricate, and powerful book by one of the most original, and–until now–least recognized comic artists at work today. The place is New York City in 1933. The setting: the Fontaine Talking Fables animation studio. Teddy Mishkin–definitely alcoholic, possibly insane–is hard at work on the latest cartoon short for Waldo the Cat, the "star" of Fontaine's stable of animated characters. But little does anyone (except Teddy) realize that Waldo is real–and that he is Teddy's insidiously helpful assistant. From the Hardcover edition.

My first husband, Goldie was obsessed with kids, and he chose to be with another woman just for kids. He said he loved me, but I don’t know whether he was true as when I asked him to hire a surrogate mother; he turned me down saying he wanted a child with love. Does love mean to have physical relation only and produce children? It might be so. I am still searching an answer to this. He asked me to stay in his life just as a mere doll, and I could not accomplish that. My second husband, Brainie was simply obsessed with money. For him, money was everything and other things served no importance in his life. He wanted me to be his money machine and after spending seven years with him, Dave came in my life. Dave, my third husband was obsessed with sex. For him marriage was just the license to physical relation freely.Whereas for me, marriage is a very sacred relation; a relation which I believe can be nurtured only with love, faith and happiness. Again love is not a simple as it sounds to be. It is the mental and emotional attachment between two persons. You cannot go before two or three persons at a time, and tell them that you love them. Before you tell a person that you love him or her, at first give a thought whether you have any respect for that person and if you can keep him or her happy. Have some love in your heart for the person with whom you are sharing a physical relation. I am so confused after so many incidents in my life that I still do not have answers to many questions. I am writing this bookand I hope earnestly that the readers will help me in finding answers to these questions: I don’t know if I had been married too many times. I don’t know even if any one of my husbands loved me. I don’t know if they had just abused my life and my trust and kicked me out of their lives.

No more than a promising actor with a handful of films to his name when he died in 1955, James Dean has since been elevated to an iconic status surpassed only by Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. And his image - a blend of '50s cool and tough-guy charm - has been vigorously marketed in the race to cash in on a legend that, forty years later, shows no sign of abating. But until now, no serious biography has looked beyond the studio-manufactured cliches to the volatile polarities of this complex star. Was he bisexual or gay? A neurotic con-man or a lost boy trying to find himself? And to what extent did his sexuality fire his performances? Drawing on many new and documented sources, and featuring previously unpublished photographs, Paul Alexander's revisionist and passionate biography will explode many people's myths about a rare acting genius.

Over a hundred years ago, a scout ship from a mysterious alien vessel crash-landed on Earth, where it was discovered by a seven-year-old boy named Al Ledicker. And so begins the confounding series of events that Kim Deitch, veteran underground cartoonist and creator of Pantheon's acclaimed graphic novel The Boulevard of Broken Dreams, has been chronicling for the last 20 years in a series of interrelated stories that have appeared in a variety of magazines—and now finally collected into one book. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 13.9px Arial; color: #424242}

At the centre of Alias the Cat are Kim Deitch and his wife, Pam - a passionate collector of Halloween cats from the 1920s and 30s. But when she buys a mysterious old cat costume, she and Kim find themselves in wholly new territory: the lost world of Alias the Cat, who, in 1915, appeared not only in a comic strip and film serial, but in real life as a freedom-fighting superhero. When Kim begins to research this forgotten figure, he uncovers one almost unbelievable story after another: about the Furries, a tiny subculture of people who dress up as cartoon animals in order to have sex; about Keller and Frankie, two seamen stranded on a Pacific island, forced to make cat toys to appease the natives; about the secret lover of Alias's alter ego, Malek Janochek; and, of course, about Deitch's own Waldo the Cat, the common thread weaving the stories together as Kim and Pam move toward a fateful showdown in Midgetville...New Jersey, of course. Alias the Cat is Kim Deitch at his eye-catching, mind-bending best.

The first ten lies they tell you in high school. "Speak up for yourself--we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. As time passes, she becomes increasingly isolated and practically stops talking altogether. Only her art class offers any solace, and it is through her work on an art project that she is finally able to face what really happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. But this time Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and thereby achieves a measure of vindication. In Laurie Halse Anderson's powerful novel, an utterly believable heroine with a bitterly ironic voice delivers a blow to the hypocritical world of high school. She speaks for many a disenfranchised teenager while demonstrating the importance of speaking up for oneself. Speak was a 1999 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

The full story of the rise and spectacular comeback of the band hailed as the saviors of punk rock and the next U2 It's hard to believe that in early 2004 Green Day was considered over--the band was still together, but they were dismissed as a strictly 90s phenomenon, incapable of re-creating the success of their groundbreaking album Dookie. Then American Idiot debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, stayed on the charts for nearly 18 months, and went on to sell more than four million records and to win Record of the Year (for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams") at this year's Grammy's. Combining unique access to Green Day with a seasoned journalist's nose for a great story, Marc Spitz gives the complete account of the band, from their earliest days to their most recent explosion of popularity and critical acclaim. Foremost, Nobody Likes You is a story of friendship and the transporting power of playing very loud music. It is the story of how high school dropout Billie Joe Armstrong came to write song lyrics that inflamed the political conscience of fans in a way that two Yale graduates couldn't. Green Day's story--from rise, to fall, to rise again--has never before been fully told.
